Bow Bridge Surprise Proposal and Central Park Engagement Session

We corresponded a couple of times before Saturday. I learned the basic elements of the plan. She was flying to NY with her family for the weekend. He was supposed to be back home in Florida. … Except he really wasn’t. Little did she know, he was on a plane Saturday morning on his way to New York City. And his bags carried something precious: an engagement ring. One of the most gorgeous rings I have ever seen. And it was going to be on her finger just a few hours later. He would propose in Central Park, and it would turn out to be magical.

It was a gorgeous day – sunny and warm (probably the warmest day we’ve had all year). I met the future groom by the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park that afternoon right before he proposed. He looked visibly calm, although I could sense the excitement and a hint of nervousness in his voice. “I’m getting nervous,” he said. “This morning I was just focused on getting on the plane and making it to the hotel on time, so I didn’t have a lot of time to think about it”. He was talking about the proposal, of course. But now that he was close to popping the question, he was feeling the jitters that come with such an important moment in a guy’s life. A few minutes later, he receives a message from his soon-to-be mother in law. She and her daughter were approaching the Bow Bridge, where he was planning to propose, and it was time to surprise her there.

I was nervous myself. I have done many engagement sessions by now, but never a surprise proposal like this one. I wanted to make sure I was fully prepared because I didn’t want to miss a single second of the beautiful proposal. I had my DSLR with my favorite zoom lens on my hands, and a backup camera in my shoulder (just in case…). And let me tell you… The moment was priceless. Her reaction was absolutely priceless. Being able to be a part of a special moment like this one and, through my images, giving people the ability to remember forever what these moments felt like is the reason I love what I do. At that moment, I was so honored that they picked me to capture this once in a lifetime milestone.

After the surprise proposal, we had an impromptu mini-engagement session and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Below is a collection of images from that beautiful Saturday afternoon. I hope you love these as much as I do.

I love seeing your photo sessions. They can’t be better. I think this couple had the privilege to have you as their photographer in such a surprising proposal. Keep working to help others have their beautiful moments immortalized forever through your work.
