Gantry Plaza State Park | Long Island City Engagement and Family Portrait Session

I finished editing a session earlier this week and I just couldn’t wait to share the images. This photo shoot I’m sharing today was really special to me. It was an engagement session… but with a twist.

A few weeks ago, I received a message from Carly. She was looking for a photographer to capture some engagement photos that she and her fiancé (Dan) could use for their wedding Save the Date’s. [Quick side note: I LOVE creating images that my couples can share with their friends and family, and that’ll get everyone excited for their wedding day!]  There was just one thing that would be a little bit different at this engagement session: Dan’s daughter (Audrey) would be joining us for the shoot and participating in it. In the end, it was an engagement session and a cute family session all wrapped into one… something I’d never done before… And it couldn’t have been more fun!

A few minutes before our session was scheduled to start, I stood in front of the Blend on the Water restaurant by the waterfront in Long Island City waiting for my couple and the cute, smart and charismatic Audrey to arrive. That corner by Blend on the Water is my usual meet-up spot whenever I shoot sessions around Gantry Plaza State Park, a beautiful park that stands along the East River overlooking Manhattan. I could see a family of three sitting on some benches by the water, but I wasn’t sure if it was them. I shot Carly a quick message and, a few seconds later, received confirmation that it was in fact them.

For her session, Carly wore a cute purple coat and some knee-high boots that looked absolutely stunning. Audrey was in a cute neon blue coat that really complemented the purple in Carly’s outfit. I don’t generally recommend using such bold colors during photo sessions because I would hate for the colors in the outfits to detract from what’s important: my clients’ faces. But the truth is, having an element in your photo shoot outfit with a bold color can actually work in your favor, especially in a session scheduled during winter time in NYC, since the added color will give your photos a bit of a “pop”. And if bold “pops” of color are your style, then your outfits should also represent exactly who you are. Carly and Audrey really rocked those bold coats and they looked so cute together!

It was such a fun session to shoot. Carly & Dan, thank you SO much for giving me the opportunity to document this special time in your life. I loved that I got to do a few engagement photos for you but also mix in A LOT of fun and sweet family photos that I’m sure you’ll treasure for many, many years to come. You were all such a joy to work with. Especially Audrey, who was full of energy and constantly made me laugh with her wittiness and charm (two traits that she definitely inherited from her dad). You have such a sweet, beautiful bond, and it really comes across in your photos.

I hope you all enjoy some of my favorite images from the session!
