I’d heard about ‘Engagement on Ice’ a long time ago. But I honestly didn’t know how incredibly magical it could be until I was there to witness a surprise marriage proposal firsthand.
A few weeks ago, I got a call from an excited groom (Karan) who was planning on proposing to his girlfriend (Felesha) at The Rink at Rockefeller Center in NYC, and he wanted me to capture their once-in-a-lifetime moment on camera. The Rink offers amazing packages that allow people to ask their significant others to marry them right there – on the ice! And they make it really easy for professional photographers to get close to the action in order to capture the magical moment as it unfolds. It’s a truly beautiful thing, and an unforgettable experience for those doing the proposing, those being proposed to and any onlookers outside of the ice who get to bear witness to it.
Karan took his unsuspecting girlfriend skating at The Rink at Rockefeller Center last Wednesday evening. And he was holding something special in one of his coat pockets. I hadn’t met them in person before that day. But I had with me a few pictures of the two of them that Karan had sent me days before the proposal. A couple of hours before, he had told me she’d be wearing a red coat and he’d be wearing a gray one, so it wasn’t hard to spot them at all in the crowd of ice skaters. I saw them fairly quickly after I got there, and I felt myself jump with joy when I did! I love the moments before I shoot a surprise marriage proposal because I can’t help but think about how incredibly beautiful and raw the moment will be, and how, in a moment’s time, the unsuspecting party’s life is going to change forever! (I also love surprises and I’m pretty good at taking secrets to the grave! lol)
For a few minutes before I knew the proposal was scheduled to happen, I watched them skate (and I snapped a few photos, of course!). I was ready to go with two camera bodies strapped across my chest, standing rink side in position while pretending to be a tourist. I had to fight off a few tourists who where looking at me with annoyed expressions because I was taking up precious real estate by the exit of The Rink and straight across from the Prometheus golden bronze sculpture where everyone wants to take the obligatory Rockefeller Center photo. But I had an important mission and wasn’t about to be intimidated by the crowd.
All of a sudden, I heard the announcement. The ice was being cleared so that they could run the ice resurfacer. I braced myself because I knew that this was Karan’s cue. He guided Felesha to the middle of the ice rink, while everyone else who was on the ice skated out quietly. You could see the look of concern on her face as one of the rink attendants skated towards them. Was he there to remind them that it was time to step out for a bit while they cleaned the ice? She took the opportunity to ask the attendant to grab a quick picture of the two of them with her camera in front of the Prometheus sculpture and fountain. But after all the pictures where done, her boyfriend still lingered on the ice, rummaging through his coat pocket. Right away, you could see the look of surprise on her face, until she realized what was happening. And then it happened. He got down on one knee, and said a few words while she smiled with happiness and love. You could hear the squeals of surprise and joy coming from the onlookers outside of the ice. It was a truly breathtaking moment!
And now… I hope you enjoy a few of my favorite images from this unforgettable surprise marriage proposal at The Rink at Rockefeller Center in New York City!
